Passive Creatures
Passive creatures form the foundation of Subnautica 2's ecosystem. They are your primary food source, scanning targets, and often your first encounter with alien life. Most passive creatures flee when approached, so a steady hand and quick scanning technique are essential.

|---|---|---|---|
| Boomerang Fish | Safe Shallows | Yes (+12 food) | Easiest catch, staple food source for early game |
| Bladderfish | Safe Shallows | Yes (-3 food, +15 water) | Best early water source, craft into filtered water |
| Peeper | Safe Shallows | Yes (+25 cooked) | Fast swimmer, harder to catch but excellent nutrition |
| Spinnerfish | Twisty Bridges | Yes (+18 cooked) | Glowing body, easy to spot at night, good mid-game food |
| Holefish | Safe Shallows (reefs) | Yes (+8 food, +5 water) | Hides in reef crevices, balanced food-water source |
| Flora Glider | Purple Vents | No | Harmless filter feeder, drifts through vent nutrient plumes |
| Crystal Mite | Deep Spires | No | Docile, found near crystal formations, essential for BioMod scans |
| Hoverfish | Safe Shallows (deeper areas) | No | Ornamental fish, can be kept in Alien Containment as pets |
| Rabbit Ray | Safe Shallows, Twisty Bridges | Yes (+8 food) | Slow, easy scan target for early blueprint progress |
| Gasopod | Twisty Bridges (open water) | No | Releases toxic gas clouds when startled, gas can be harvested with a container |
| Skyray | Surface (all biomes) | No | Flying creature above water, purely decorative |
| Hoover Fish | Twisty Bridges (seafloor) | Yes (+10 cooked) | Nuzzles the seafloor, very docile, easy catch |
Passive creatures are the easiest scanning targets. Complete your Passive Creature scan list early for free blueprint unlock progress. Each full scan contributes to your total scan count, which unlocks certain story-related data boxes.
Aggressive Creatures
Aggressive creatures pose varying levels of threat. Understanding their attack patterns and territorial behavior is key to surviving encounters. Most aggressive creatures are territorial rather than actively predatory — they attack when you enter their space, not when they see you from a distance.
| Name | Biome | Damage | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Biter | Safe Shallows caves | Low | Easy to avoid, can be killed with 2-3 knife strikes |
| Boomerang Hunter | Twisty Bridges | Medium | Patrols in pairs, use rock terrain to break line of sight |
| Lava Larva | Purple Vents | None (drains power) | Attaches to vehicles and drains battery, remove with knife |
| Cave Crawler | Crystal Caves | Medium | Ambush predator, listen for clicking sounds before entering tunnels |
| Spineback Eel | Purple Vents | High | Aggressive when approached, keep distance and use Stasis Rifle |
| Bleeder | All biomes (inside wrecks) | Low (DoT) | Latches onto player, drains health over time, remove with melee |
| Mesmer | Twisty Bridges (caves) | Medium | Hypnotic patterned fins, look away to avoid stun, then attack |
| Crabsnake | Crystal Caves (ceilings) | High | Drops from above, listen for hissing warning before entering caves |
| Crashfish | Safe Shallows (cave flora) | High (explosive) | Swims out of flora pods when approached, explodes after 3 seconds. Swim away quickly |
| Boneshark | Twisty Bridges (deeper areas) | Medium | Curious, will circle and investigate, attacks if you hold still too long |
| Lava Lizard | Purple Vents (near vents) | Medium-High | Spits heated projectiles, use terrain cover to approach |
Aggressive Creature Strategy Guide
Each aggressive creature type requires a different approach. Here are detailed strategies for the most dangerous ones:
- Crashfish — When you hear the distinctive hissing pop sound, swim away from the flora pod immediately. The Crashfish will chase you for about 3 seconds before exploding. The explosion deals heavy damage but has a small radius. Strafe to the side just before it reaches you.
- Mesmer — Its hypnotic pattern will disorient you if you look directly at it. The tell is a shimmering, colorful pattern on its fins. Turn your camera away and the stun effect breaks. Attack while it is recovering from its failed hypnosis.
- Spineback Eel — This is the most dangerous aggressive creature in EA 1.0. It patrols open areas of Purple Vents. Use the Seaglide's speed boost to create distance. The Stasis Rifle is the safest way to scan or bypass it.
- Bleeder — Inside wrecks, always carry a knife. If you feel a sudden impact and see your health dropping, you have a Bleeder attached. Immediately equip your knife and strike once to remove it.
Most aggressive creatures are more active during the day cycle. Night exploration in dangerous biomes can actually be safer — many predators rest during the dark phase. Use your Light Gene or flashlight to navigate.
Leviathan Class Creatures
Leviathans are the apex predators of Subnautica 2. EA 1.0 features seven confirmed leviathan-class creatures, ranging from docile giants to deadly apex predators. Most cannot be killed with currently available equipment — avoidance and evasion are the only viable strategies. This section covers every leviathan, its location, behavior, and how to survive an encounter.
| Name | Biome | Threat Level | Behavior | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vent Leviathan | Purple Vents (north sector) | Extreme | Territorial, attracted to light and vibration | Avoid headlights, hug seafloor, use Speed module to escape |
| Spire Leviathan | Deep Spires (central) | Moderate | Passive unless provoked, guards breeding grounds | Do not attack young or approach nest. Safe to observe from distance |
| Collector Leviathan | Graveyard, Root Canyon (~950m east) | Extreme | Intelligent squid-like predator, 4 hunting tentacles, uses thrusters | Stay within 5m of surface to avoid aggro; use speed boost to create distance to despawn |
| Great Jaw | Shallows, 3rd Tadpole fragment site | Lethal (trap) | Stationary giant clam, tripwire tendons trigger jaw snap + gastric acid | Approach on foot, cut one tendon at a time, stay out of vision between cuts |
| Shiver Leviathan | The Void / Dead Zones (map edge, ~5,000m deep) | Lethal | Pack hunter, female leads 2-3 males, one-shot kill even in vehicles | Do not cross the red barrier. Flares are ineffective. Scan-and-flee only |
| Deepwing Brooder | Open ocean (multiple biomes) | None | Docile, harmless filter feeder, can be approached safely | Safe to scan and observe. No special precautions needed |
| World Tree | Northeast of Lifepod (visible from surface) | Dormant | Inactive titan, no threat, purely environmental | Cannot be interacted with in EA 1.0. Visible but inaccessible |
Vent Leviathan — Detailed Analysis
The Vent Leviathan patrols the northern sector of Purple Vents. It is approximately 45 meters long with bioluminescent ridges along its back. It is attracted to light sources (vehicle headlights, flashlights) and vibration (engine noise, rapid movement).
Key behaviors to recognize:
- Silent approach — When all ambient noise in Purple Vents goes quiet, the Vent Leviathan is nearby. Stop moving and look around carefully.
- Roar sequence — A low-frequency roar that vibrates the screen means it has detected you. Immediately turn off all lights and engines.
- Charge attack — If it charges, activate your Speed module and use terrain to break line of sight. It gives up chase after approximately 200 meters.
Spire Leviathan — Detailed Analysis
The Spire Leviathan is found in the central Deep Spires biome. At 60+ meters, it is the largest creature in EA 1.0. Despite its intimidating size, it is completely passive toward players who do not approach its nesting grounds.
Important notes:
- Nesting behavior — The central spire formation contains juvenile Spire Leviathans. Attacking or approaching these young will enrage the adult.
- Scanning — You can safely approach to within 20 meters for scanning. The adult will observe you but not attack as long as you maintain distance from the nest.
- Resources — Rare Ionite Crystal deposits are found near the nest. Harvest carefully and leave the area quickly.
Collector Leviathan — Detailed Analysis
The Collector Leviathan is the most dangerous creature in EA 1.0 — an intelligent, squid-like apex predator found in the Graveyard and Root Canyon biomes, approximately 950 meters directly east of the Lifepod. It has 4 hunting tentacles tipped with bio-glass claws, a beak that can crush titanium, and three hearts. Unlike other leviathans, it actively observes and manipulates prey rather than attacking on pure instinct.
Key behaviors and survival tips:
- Observation phase — The Collector will circle you for 10-15 seconds before attacking. Use this window to retreat to shallow water.
- Thruster burst — It can accelerate suddenly. Never assume you are safe at medium range.
- Surface safety — Staying within 5 meters of the surface may prevent it from initiating a full attack.
- Despawn range — If you put approximately 45,000 units between you and it, the Collector despawns.
- Dead hollow shells — Finding hollowed-out Great Jaw shells means you are in Collector territory. Leave immediately.
Great Jaw Leviathan — Detailed Analysis
The Great Jaw (community nickname "Clamthulu") is a stationary trap leviathan that resembles a giant clam. It sits motionless with its shell open, extending invisible tripwire tendons across the opening. Disturb a tendon and its eyes snap open; disturb a second one while it is watching, and the jaws slam shut, filling with gastric acid that dissolves the player instantly.
Safe looting strategy:
- Approach on foot — Vehicles are too large and will trigger multiple tendons at once.
- One tendon at a time — Cut or disturb only one tendon, then wait for the Great Jaw to calm down before cutting the next.
- Stay out of vision — Position yourself above or behind the shell rim between cuts to avoid detection.
- Loot — Inside you will find the Portable Oxygen Generator blueprint and lithium pearls.
- Warning sign — If you find a dead, hollowed-out Great Jaw shell, a Collector Leviathan is nearby. Retreat to safe waters.
Shiver Leviathan — Detailed Analysis
The Shiver Leviathan is a pack-hunting apex predator found in the Void (Dead Zones) at the edge of the map, below approximately 5,000 meters depth. It is a one-shot killer — even in a fully upgraded Tadpole, a single encounter means death. A large female leads 2-3 smaller males who flank and surround prey. They have a sensory organ on the female's tail that functions as long-range sonar.
Critical warnings:
- Red barrier — You will see a red barrier at the map edge. Crossing it triggers Shiver Leviathan spawns.
- Pack tactics — Males flank while the female attacks head-on. You cannot outrun them.
- Flares ineffective — Unlike other aggressive fauna, flares do not distract the Shiver Leviathan.
- Only viable strategy — Do not cross the red barrier. If you must scan, use a fast vehicle with Camouflage Biomod and flee immediately after the scan.
Deepwing Brooder & World Tree
The Deepwing Brooder is a completely docile leviathan found floating in open ocean across multiple biomes. It is a harmless filter feeder and can be safely approached for scanning and observation. No special precautions are needed.
The World Tree is a dormant titan leviathan visible from the surface northeast of the Lifepod. It cannot be interacted with in EA 1.0 — it is purely an environmental feature that hints at future content updates. The developers have confirmed it will play a role in later chapters.
Leviathan Evasion Techniques
When facing a leviathan, combat is never the answer. Use these evasion techniques instead:
- Silent running — Turn off vehicle lights and engine when detected. Most leviathans rely on sonar-like senses.
- Terrain masking — Use rock formations, thermal vents, and spire structures as cover. Leviathans have poor turning radius.
- Speed burst — Activate the Speed module for a 10-second burst. Enough to break line of sight in most biomes.
- Decoy — Craft and deploy decoys from the Tadpole vehicle. Decoys create a false signal that leviathans investigate.
- Stasis Rifle — A well-timed Stasis shot freezes a leviathan for 5-8 seconds (depending on charge). Use this to escape or reposition.
- Never engage leviathans directly — they cannot be killed with EA 1.0 equipment.

Ecosystem and Biome Food Chains
Subnautica 2 features a simplified but functional ecosystem. Understanding food chains helps you predict creature locations and behaviors:
- Safe Shallows — Boomerang Fish and Bladderfish are prey for no major predator. Biters prey on small fish but pose little threat to players.
- Twisty Bridges — Boomerang Hunters prey on Spinnerfish and Hoovers. Bonesharks scavenge the seafloor. Mesmers use hypnotic lures on small prey.
- Purple Vents — Spineback Eels hunt Lava Lizards and small fish. Vent Leviathan is the apex predator, feeding on Spineback Eels. Lava Larva are parasites on vehicles and large fauna.
- Deep Spires / Crystal Caves — Cave Crawlers and Crabsnakes compete for territory. Crystal Mites are filter feeders near mineral deposits. Spire Leviathan sits at top of the food chain but is not actively predatory.
