- 4 Million Copies Sold (First 5 Days) — Fastest-selling game on Steam in 2026
- 467,000 Concurrent Players (Peak) — 9x the original Subnautica's peak
- 91% "Very Positive" Rating — Across 94,000+ reviews
- 6 Million+ Players (Including Xbox/Game Pass)
- $84 Million Net Revenue (Steam Only) — After 30% platform cut, first week
- $250 Million Bonus Triggered — Krafton legally required to pay Unknown Worlds founders. Bonus structure: $3.12 per $1 over $69.8M monthly threshold, capped at $250M. Represents ~35% of Krafton's 2025 operating profit.
The Krafton Legal Battle
In 2021, Krafton acquired Unknown Worlds with an earnout clause promising up to $250M bonus if performance targets were met. In 2025, Krafton fired CEO Ted Gill and other founders, claiming they rushed development. A Delaware court found Krafton wrongfully terminated Gill and reinstated him. Evidence emerged that Krafton CEO Chang-han Kim consulted ChatGPT for strategies to avoid the payout — describing the contract as a "pushover" deal. The court rejected this defense, and Subnautica 2's explosive launch triggered the maximum bonus.
Community Response & Developer Communication
Executive Producer Fernando Melo published an open letter on May 21, apologizing for developer comments and committing to better community communication. The letter addressed concerns about creature aggression, EULA terms, and the "no weapons" design philosophy.
